What is Pekiti Tirsia Kali?

Pekiti Tirsia Kali (PTK) is a Filipino close‑quarters combat system that was founded in 1897 by the Tortal family in the Visayan region of the Philippines. It is a blade‑based martial art that integrates knives, sticks, swords, improvised weapons and empty‑hand tactics into one complete approach to real‑world violence.

What does the name mean?

The name Pekiti Tirsia Kali comes from the Ilongo/Bisaya language. “Pekiti” means to get in very close, while “Tirsia” refers to cutting or quartering the opponent into parts. Together they describe the idea of closing the distance and finishing the fight at close range. “Kali” is the traditional Filipino blade‑fighting art, derived from the word kalis (sword).

How is PTK different?

PTK is not a sport or a choreography‑based system. It was developed as a family combat method and later adopted by military and law‑enforcement units because of its focus on live blades, realistic tactics and surviving violent encounters. Training starts with weapons from day one and the same principles are then applied to empty‑hand fighting.
